October 28th - Tengu (天狗)
Tengu are youkai with somewhat bird-like features who are said to lurk in remote forests and mountains. These demons seem to be very unpredictable, and are portrayed as being evil and mischievous as often as the are portrayed as being helpful spirits. There are usually two types of tengu: daitengu, or “great tengu”, which have a more human appearance with a very long nose; and karasu-tengu, or “crow tengu”, which are very avian in appearance, often having beaks and a great deal of feathers.
Originally portrayed by Buddhists to be extremely destructive creatures, tengu gradually came to have a better reputation as protective spirits. However, tengu can still be extremely dangerous and unpredictable, especially when their pride is hurt in some way. They are both feared and respected for their great powers. In addition to a number of supernatural powers such as shapeshifting and telepathy, the tengu are also said to be masters of martial arts who trained ninja and samurai.
In the Hogen Monogatari, Emperor Sutoku is exiled to the island of Shikoku after his defeat in the Hogen Rebellion. Because of this, he swore that upon his death he would haunt Japan as a fearsome demon. When he died he grew long claws and turned into a tengu.
